Valspar Tropical Bay + Antique Store Makeovers

Yesterday I took a trip to Lowe's to see if I could find any cool hardware for jewelry making. While trying to navigate through pipes, electrical wires, and tools that I can't even begin to name,  I stumbled upon Valspar's Summer 2012 color line. I know it's a bit late for summer colors, but I loved every color in their collection!

They offer each featured color in a half-pint sample container for only $2.95 + tax. I picked up a half pint of Tropical Bay, which is a greenish-blueish-greyish color a few shades darker than my bedroom wall color. The best part is that these samples are in satin, which means they dry with a nice sheen to them instead of a dull, flat finish.

They had about twenty different colors in the collection and each was organized by theme. They also offered free little books with all of the colors featured for easy reference. I got one for myself, but ended up giving it to my seven-year-old nephew because he wanted to use it to make his own book.

After leaving Lowe's, we headed for Butler's Antique Mall to look around. I scored a cool vintage lock to use for jewelry making, heaps of lace doilies, and a vintage spice rack.

The spice rack was $8.00 and included all of the original bottles, but was the original wood color. I used my Valspar Tropical Bay paint to update it and here is the finished product!

After three coats of paint. Why do I always forget to take before pictures?

It took about three coats to fully cover the dark wood and the paint quality was excellent. Maybe I am used to the teeny tiny bottles of cheap acrylic paint that I pick up at craft stores, but I was really amazed at how easy this paint was to use. Plus the shape of the container makes for easy access to the paint so you don't have to constantly squeeze the paint out of the tube.

I also repainted this vintage coffee mug holder that I had originally painted black:

And I made lots of new necklaces!

I hope that you all had a wonderful long, relaxing weekend! Let me know if you have tried any of the Valspar paints. I'm thinking about going to pick up a few more half pints!

Happy crafting!

P.S. Here is a funny photo from my best friend Chelsea's wedding in April:

I made her necklace!
